Air Niugini emerging leaders receive training on Management

Twenty five (25) managers from various sections within Air Niugini had the opportunity to attend a weeklong emerging leaders? program aimed at providing knowledge, strategies and practical techniques to effectively lead their staff.

The emerging second tier leaders were selected to attend the training based on their current work performance and potential for future career progression.

Following an intensive psychometric testing, leaders then progressed to the ?Trusted Leadership Program?, ?an award winning, innovative and cutting edge program facilitated by Living Stones, an Australian based Training consultancy company.

It covered among others, foundations of leadership, communication, transactional and transformational leadership.

Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Mr Simon Foo who was present at the closing of the training said the airline is a highly regulated industry with a lot of emphasis on safety and compliance.

He said Air Niugini invests up to K16million each year for training and human resource development to ensure staff including managers and team leaders are properly trained.

Mr Foo said leaders are invaluable and such an ongoing leadership skills training is essential to making sure leaders or managers are on track when negotiating, influencing or making a decision for their staff or Air Niugini.

?All successful organisations and businesses need effective leaders and the leadership of effective and well trained leaders is paramount to providing an agreed upon goal for the company?s success.? Mr Foo said.

The weeklong leadership training enabled managers to engage in difficult conversations, develop staff and promote team effectiveness. It also helped them to explore ways to craft techniques to lead people through change, increasing accountability, influence staff and negotiate difficult situations.

Following the completion of this training, the managers are expected to have a clear and realistic set of goals, stronger communication skills, coaching and self-awareness and more persuasive in negotiating and influencing changes to their staff and the airline.
